Revision of E84 - 19 Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials

    (What is a Work Item?)

    Active Standard: E84 - 19a

Developed by Subcommittee: E05.22 | Committee E05 | Contact Staff Manager

    WK67858

    1. Rationale

Section 1.3 of ASTM E84 contains important information regarding the significance of results from tests in which added supports are used on the underside of the test specimen in order to hold the specimen in place. Similarly, Section 1.4 contains important information regarding the significance of the test as it pertains to materials that melt, drip or delaminate to such a degree that the continuity of the flame front is destroyed. While the advisory information currently given in Sections 1.3 and 1.4 of E84 is relevant to the comparability and significance of results from tests on specimens supported as such, or exhibiting the performance characteristics listed therein, this advisory information is not typically included within the resulting test report. This proposal adds provisions within the Report section (Section 11) to mirror the existing provisions of Sections 1.3 and 1.4, thereby ensuring that this important and relevant information is included within the test report.
