    Rationale

    The testing procedures for paving slabs were moved into ASTM C140 during a previous ballot. Prior to this the requirements were contained in C1782, the specification for paving slabs. During a review, it was found that there were two issues related to measurement tolerances that needed to be addressed in the requirements in ASTM C140. This ballot proposes the following changes: Adding a tolerance for the measurement of length and width of paving slabs. The proposed tolerance is 0.02 in. [0.5 mm]. This was chosen because it is consistent with the requirements in ASTM C1782 for measuring slabs. It provides the required level of accuracy to evaluate length and width deviations for slabs. Changing the tolerance for measuring warpage of slabs. Currently the standard requires measuring warpage to 0.01 in. [0.25 mm]. This ballot proposes to change that tolerance to 0.02 in. [0.5 mm]. Once again, this will make the requirements of ASTM C140 consistent with the intent of ASTM C1782 (referring to Section 7.3 of the current C1782). It also still provides the level of accuracy needed to evaluate slabs relative to dimensional requirements.
