    Withdrawal of C1105 - 08a(2016) Standard Test Method for Length Change of Concrete Due to Alkali-Carbonate Rock Reaction

    This standard is being balloted for withdrawal with no replacement because the purpose of this ballot is to initiate the process to remove ASTM C1105 and to add in a section (s) within the current ASTM C1293 for evaluating the potential reactivity of alkali-carbonate reactive aggregates. This was the original intent of members of the committee who developed the C1105 standard many years ago. The chair of C09.50, Thano Drimalas, will enter an administrative negative to keep the results of this first ballot within the Subcommittee, should no negative votes be received. The intent is not to IMMEDIATELY remove C1105 but rather to generate comments/input through the balloting process, from members who were not present at the last committee meeting in December of 2018. At that meeting the subcommittee decided to follow this process so that we could elicit a broader response from the C09.50 membership and make informed decisions moving forward with respect to the desired approach to remove C1105 and update C1293 to allow for testing of both ASR and ACR aggregates. There are numerous issues with C1105 including testing parameters that will not adequately distinguish between ACR and ASR including but not limited to: 1) no alkali loading specified 2) the use of job mixtures which we know is not appropriate for this test method due to excess leaching throughout the test 3) the limits of the test method 4) incorrect guidance in the Appendix of C1105 regarding aggregate beneficiation 4) reference to the Appendix in C33 which no longer exists 5) no reference to C1778.
