New Test Method for Dynamic Compression of Bulk Metallic Materials using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar / Kolsky Bar

1. Scope

1.1This test method covers the apparatus, specimen and procedure for uniaxial compression testing of bulk metallic samples at strain rates of 102 to 103 1/s using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (Kolsky Bar). This method will provide the compressive stress-strain behavior of the bulk material at these strain rates. 1.2Data obtained by this test method have been found useful in a number of engineering applications, including modeling ballistic problems, designing blast-resistant structures, and simulating dynamic manufacturing processes such as machining and high-speed metal forming. However, precautions and limitations of this method exist and are discussed. (can make note on this) 1.3The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to Imperial units that are provided for information only and not considered standard. 1.4This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Note 1: This test method will source a standard test material and methods to perform a calibration test to verify system performance.

Rationale

There is currently no existing standard that prescribes a method for getting the flow rate or dynamic behavior of bulk metallic materials at strain rates of 10^2 to 10^3 per second. However, this technique is used by arguable hundreds of labs around the United States and internationally to evaluate material behavior at these rates. With more industries using the data and purchasing their own equipment, a standard would help codify the technique and put some expectation on a a basic dynamic test.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
