The scope of this standard is to standardize the codes used to identify plastic used to produce parts and products to ease recycling and use of the resultant recycled resin. This system would enable plastic recyclers to specify the particular plastics desired and to also better define their plastic mix. This will further enhance the ability for product producers to use recycled resin.
The Resin Identification Code (RIC) developed by SPI (now Plastics Industry Association) is intended for rigid plastic packaging and thus only has identifiers for six generic resin types (and a catchall #7). For plastic parts and products in general, this system does not identify the resins specifically enough for recovery and for recycled material usage.
