New Specification for Torso and Limb Protection Worn by Civil Disturbance Unit Officers

1. Scope

Scope: 1.This specification addresses personal protective equipment (PPE) worn by law enforcement officers to protect the torso and limbs from injuries that may be experienced while supporting citizens and communities in holding protests and demonstrations. 2.This specification takes into account the required protection balanced with ergonomics, safety, and the officers need to function and perform duties. 3.Protective capabilities addressed by this specification include resistance to the following: 3.1.Blunt impacts by objects (e.g., rocks, bricks, bottles, frozen soda cans) that are forcibly thrown or launched 3.2.Stab threats (e.g., knife, improvised shiv) and slash threats (e.g., machete, ax) 3.3.Flames and high-temperature, such as may be caused by Molotov cocktails, flares, and other burning materials 3.4.Common solvents, acids, and bases 4.Ergonomic, safety, and functional requirements addressed include durability, range-of-motion, adjustability, ease of donning/doffing, area of coverage, and thermal comfort.
