New Test Method for the Determination of Chemical Composition Distribution of Linear Polyolefins by Temperature Rising Elution Fractionation (TREF)

1. Scope

This test method uses commercially available polyethylene standards and equipment and is applicable to polyethylenes, polypropylenes and ethylene-propylene copolymers which are soluble at elevated temperatures (140-160C) in solvents such as 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (TCB), 1,2-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) or others.

Keywords

TREF - temperature rising elution fractionation :Polymers :Chemical composition distribution :

Rationale

This analytical method is widely used in the polymer industry to characterize polymer compositions. The method has been refined by users so consolidation of their experiences by the vendor will standardize the testing method.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
