    Subcommittee D08-02 received a request to review the use of alternate plugs in the Sieve Shaker unit specified in the procedure within Standard D452. An informal survey of several users of these procedures revealed that most were using alternatives to the specified hard maple plug and that the most common usage was a hard rubber plug and several labs used cork plugs. The use of rubber or cork is apparently preferred for peace and quiet in the test environment and many laboratories also employ sound-insulated boxes to isolate the shaker units during the testing. CertainTeed volunteered to conduct some comparative testing using all three plugs to determine the effects on the results of the sieve analysis of sand backsurfacer materials. The results are presented below in support of a Revision to the Standard to permit use of all three types of plug at the discretion of the user. It is clear that the rotational and vibrational impact energy involved in this test, when employed for the specified time, is sufficient to obtain an accurate and reproducible sieve analysis. In the supporting data, it appears that the sampling variability in repeated tests from the same lot of material may be greater than the measurement variability and a separate revision of D452 has been proposed to address that issue.
