Mortar workability and ease of use by the mason are important mortar attributes. Workable mortars contribute to quality workmanship through beneficial mortar properties, including uniform flow, integral masonry unit contact, longer board life, and good joint finishing characteristics. In 2015, ASTM Committee C01 made a change to ASTM C1329, Standard Specification for Mortar Cement, increasing the upper limit for allowable air content while maintaining the flexural bond strength requirement to improve the workability of mortar cement mortars. This ballot proposes a revision to the C270 Property Specification Requirements (Table 1) to adjust the air content limits for mortar cement mortars in C270 in recognition of the increased air content limits allowed in C1329 since 2015.
