    Rationale

    ASTM C270 lists cements that are allowed to make mortar in Section 4, Materials. One of the currently allowed cement standards, C595 Blended Hydraulic Cements, now defines two additional base cement types, Type IL, portland-limestone blended cement, and Type IT, ternary blended cement. This ballot proposes to add Types IL and IT to the allowable cement types of C270 for two reasons: the physical and chemical similarity of Types IL and IT to currently allowed C595 cements (IP and IS) and test results for mortars made with Types IL and IT that meet property requirements of C270. C1072 test results are also provided to show that these mortars meet an optional requirement for flexural bond strength.
