1. Scope
1.1This test method is qualitative and designated to evaluate the ability of meter pulling devices with or without shields and shields for meter pulling devices to withstand thermal and mechanical impact resulted from electric arc exposure. This is a destructive test. 1.2This is the design test and no retest is required unless either design or material change or retest is specified in conformance requirements. 1.3Specifically, this test method is used for meter pulling devices and shields to demonstrate as a result of a controlled electric arc exposure: (1) resistance to breakopen, (2) mechanical strength, (3) resistance to ignition or ability to self-extinguish flames, and (4) resistance to melting and dripping.
Keywords
meter pulling device, meter puller, meter puller shield, ejected electric arc, electric arc protection, arc electrodes, parallel arc electrodes, arc durationRationale
Meter pulling devices are currently on the market but there is no test method to assure safe use in electric arc situation. Test labs and device manufactures will use this standards. It could be useful for end users as a learning tool of arc protection properties of equipment they use.
The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
