    A survey of D1655 has revealed that the referee test methods are designated inconsistently throughout the document. Sometimes the referee method for a particular property is identified only in Table 1 footnotes, sometimes only in Section 11 (Test Methods), and sometimes in an Appendix. It was reasoned that consistency in these designations would provide clarity, and removal of associated extraneous and redundant text would provide simplification for the users. The J1 editorial panel solicited feedback from the subcommittee in December 2017 (Houston, TX) for possible options that would best bring the clarity sought after. Based on feedback the panel pursued underlining the referee methods whenever encountered in the document. However, during the April 2018 (Lima, Peru) meeting it was brought to attention that the online version of the specification includes hyperlinks for all the test methods, and that underlining the referee methods could create confusion in the online version. This was deemed to be a valid concern, and thus, italicizing the referee methods, instead of underlining, is now being proposed with this ballot. Please note that the ballot does not aim to determine referee methods when lacking (e.g., sulfur, density, etc.), but is only editorial in nature, targeting improvement in clarity of the referee method designations already present. The proposed changes have been reviewed by the ASTM Editor and found to be editorial in nature. Although editorial (i.e. not technical) in nature, an administrative ballot to ensure wide Subcommittee J acceptance was deemed appropriate. As an administrative ballot item, any negatives obtained will not be adjudicated and the ballot item will not pass to the main committee level. A motion to ballot was approved at the June 2016 ASTM meeting in Bellevue, WA.
