    1. Scope

    The proposed scope of this specification is to provide agencies, engineers and contractors with guidance about proper selection of geotextiles used to provide a separation, drainage and bond breaker interlayer for new concrete pavement and new concrete unbonded overlays. Both construction specification and installation guidance will be provided for proper selection and installation including various methods to fasten the geotextile to existing pavement.

    Rationale

    Since the May 2009 FHWA scan tour publication on geotextile bond breakers, there has been significant advancement in the approval, acceptance and specification for DOT and local projects and no advancement of an AASHTO specification. The use of geotextile bond breakers is growing worldwide. New developments in research have led to improved specifications and installation guidance. One improved installation method uses adhesive to fasten the geotextile to existing concrete pavement over a traditional nail down method. Providing the industry with an updated specification will aid in continued DOT, local and private projects and can be used worldwide. This specification will be used in the design and construction of new concrete pavement over cement treated base, lean concrete base or cement stabilized soils, unbonded concrete pavement overlays and possibly concrete overlays over existing composite pavement. DOTs, local agencies, private developers, engineers and contractors will use this specification.
