    Rationale

    Estimation of water-cement ratio (w/c) and water-cementitious materials ratio (w/cm) are frequently requested as part of a petrographic examination. The task group has determined there is a need for additional information to supplement the guidance given in ASTM C856 Section 13. Paste Features. The information developed by the task group discusses a variety of different methods and techniques currently used by petrographers to estimate water-cement ratio (w/c) and water-cementitious materials ratio (w/cm). The appendix discusses characteristics of concrete that are influenced by w/c and w/cm, and provides cautions concerning interpretation of w/c and w/cm. The appendix reinforces the existing statement in Section 13. that there are no stand-alone methods for estimating w/c and w/cm.
