New Guide for Temporal Methods for Sensory Attributes

1. Scope

1.1This guide covers procedures for measurement of time-related (temporal) sensory perceptions of multiple attributes and multiple events or exposures of products or other sensory stimuli. 1.2The selection of an appropriate method will depend on the determination of the temporal parameters being studied. Requirements, strengths and limitations for each method are explained, and the rationale for selection of a specific method is provided. Specific methods discussed in this guide include: 1.2.1Progressive or Sequential Profiling 1.2.2Multiple Attribute Time Intensity 1.2.3Temporal Dominance of Sensations 1.2.4Temporal Order of Sensations 1.2.5Temporal Check-All-That-Apply 1.3Training and/or orientation is required to assure meaningful results will be obtained. Data collection must accommodate a wide range of conditions and temporal rates. Statistical analysis of the data obtained through these methods is provided and the alternatives clearly discussed. 1.4Strategies for communicating temporal information about products to stakeholders are provided. 1.5This guide does not cover the time-intensity evaluation of sensory attributes addressed in E1909. This guide is not applicable to measure product shelf life or stability that require evaluations over extended time. 1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Rationale

This guide describes procedures utilizing specially trained panelists to measure time-related sensory perceptions of multiple attributes and multiple events or exposures of products or other sensory stimuli. Several methods are described and compared to allow for the selection of the method appropriate to measure the temporal parameter(s) of interest. Details on Progressive or Sequential Profiling, Multiple Attribute Time Intensity, Temporal Dominance of Sensations, Temporal Order of Sensations and Temporal Check-All-That-Apply methods are included in this guide.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
