ASTM WK62424

New Test Method for Observing Transition from Smoldering to Flaming in Flexible Foam/Fabric Assemblies

    (What is a Work Item?)

Developed by Subcommittee: E05.15 | Committee E05 | Contact Staff Manager

    WK62424

    1. Scope

    1. Scope 1.1 This fire response test method establishes a procedure for reproducibly measuring time to ignition of foam and fabric assemblies that have the potential to transition from smoldering to flaming when exposed to a small localized heating source. 1.2 This test method is intended for use by fire safety engineers and fire safety scientists to help determine whether certain combinations of foams (of varying chemical composition and density) and fabric (of varying chemical composition, weave, and areal weight) would or would not transition to flaming. This information is potentially useful to develop materials that are less likely to transition to flaming when exposed to a smoldering ignition source. 1.3 The transition from smoldering to flaming is measured either via visual observation or by means of an infrared camera. 1.4 The system of units to be used in referee decisions is the SI system of units, see only. The units given in parentheses are for information only. 1.5 This standard is used to measure and describe the response of materials, products, or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but does not by itself incorporate all factors required for fire hazard or fire risk assessment of the materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions. 1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific hazard statements, see section 8. 1.7 Fire testing is inherently hazardous. Adequate safeguards for personnel and property shall be employed in conducting these tests.

    Keywords

14.1 Fabric, flaming combustion; foam; smoldering combustion, upholstered furniture

    Rationale

There are fire test methods to assess smoldering ignition potential and flaming ignition potential but no test method to assess the probability of transition from smoldering to flaming

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
