    1. Scope

    These test methods cover tests for cold-applied types of joint and crack seal bands for Portland cement concrete and asphaltic concrete pavements.

    Crack seal band is a preformed strip material for pavements, for rapid, cost effective, and environmentally friendly crack repairing, and it is easy to use. Unlike the conventional hot-applied asphalt sealant, crack seal band does not require cutting of pavement or cleaning for most existing pavements. The seal band is directly applied on the cracks, and the pavement is immediately open to traffic. As far as I know, crack seal band is not a new material, some seal band trial road were done in Canada around the year 2000. However, most of the seal bands were pulled out by vehicles, this seal band technology then was give up in Canada. In the United States, QwikSeal produced by Crafco Inc. is also one type of seal band. In China, the initial seal bands were cut into strips from waterproof, these seal bands showed poor field performance. In recent years, the application of seal band has been very common in China, the qualities of seal band have significantly improved, it shows better cost-effective than hot-poured sealant. Last year, more than 3 million meters seal band was used, which were produced by dozens of manufacturers. The application methods of crack seal band include hot-applied crack seal bands and cold-applied crack seal bands. Most crack seal bands are cold-applied self-adhesion band without the need for heating. There are two categories regarding the materials in the seal band, fabric bands and fabric-free seal bands. I have been responsible for develop Chinas crack seal band specification since 2012, this specification (JT/T 969) was released by Ministry of Transport of China in 2015. I also have published two papers about crack seal band in Journal of Testing and Evaluation and Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering. I have talk to a few experts in TRB Annual Meetings. As expected, some people are sceptical about crack seal band, however, other people show great interest on it, and they are looking into the possibility of using crack seal band in the US. They said the best way to approach this is to have them try it out. I therefore have a suggestion of developing Standard Test Methods and Specification for Crack Seal Band, which will promote the application of this material in the United States, Canada and all round the world.
