ASTM WK59677

New Guide for Guideline for selecting Corrosion measurement for Thermal Insulations based on Type of material and field application

    (What is a Work Item?)

    WK59677

    1. Scope

Industry guide to address insulation related corrosion concerns by gathering all the relevant corrosion standards in one place to compare the applicability based on the field condition, corrosion mechanisms, and insulation type. This will help to avoid the confusion for both supplier and end user and also cut cost for using multiple methods when unnecessary.

    Keywords

Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI), Thermal Insulation

    Rationale

Many corrosion standards currently exist and used in the industry. Although many of these standards could be applicable to some areas but not relevant to all areas and therefore need to be properly addressed. This could be done through studying the insulation material and considering the system approach, studying the corrosion mechanisms for each type, considering the important impacting factors in each mechanism which needs to be measured, and finally selecting a meaningful test method based on the real field condition. Since this standard does not currently exist, urge the industry to create a guideline for both end users and supplier to evaluate each method and address the requirement for just the applicable one to avoid the misunderstand and confusion.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
