    Rationale

The title of this Standard is being revised to remove/replace the term Digital Statistical Sound Analysis System as most equipment is now digital. In addition,an Appendix will be added to E1503 outlining protocols for determining the relative contributions to the ambient sound level of multiple sound sources in outdoor situations. The Appendix will be titled X2. Standard Guide for Acoustical Forensics in Outdoor Situations The word forensic is used in the Appendix in the expectation that the methodology will be most useful in situations where the measured outdoor sound levels at particular positions of interest must be further analyzed and perhaps measured at additional locations in order to evaluate, assess, qualify and quantify the relative contributions from multiple sound sources. It is with such enhanced analysis in mind, necessary to the discovery of relatively obscure sound level contributions, that is to say they are otherwise acoustically masked or effectively hidden, that the idea of forensics is incorporated here. Many formal and informal practices address measurement of outdoor sound levels for situations that are normally encountered. However, there is sometimes a need to enlarge upon or modify conventional acoustical survey methods in order to accommodate a special situation or a regulatory requirement. This guide provides options for such non-normal situations, and provides guidance for selecting appropriate options. The Appendix is intended to assist users in conducting outdoor sound measurements for the purpose of evaluating the level and spectra of existing sound sources at a specific location of interest in the presence of unavoidable interfering sounds, or helping to establish compliance with various local noise ordinances, codes, or bylaws, including performance standards in zoning regulations that contain specific sound level limits of various types in the presence of a complex sound field with multiple sound sources contributing. This includes characterization of the acoustical environment of a site where the sound emissions of a specific sound source exhibits a temporal or frequency variation in sound output in the presence of other sounds. Measurement of low-frequency sound, commonly referred to as infra-sound, may be included because infrasound energy is sometimes implicated in driving structural vibration that translates to audible sound at a receiver. Measurement of impulsive sound and sound with significant tonal content may also be included. The Appendix portion of this revised Standard replaces a previous stand alone Guideline being developed under WK52842.
