ASTM WK56175

New Classification for Degradable Materials and Products

    (What is a Work Item?)

Developed by Subcommittee: D34.03 | Committee D34 | Contact Staff Manager

    WK56175

    1. Scope

This classification provides a general classification system for the degradation of materials and products based on the mechanism of degradation, rate of degradation, extent of degradation and the environment in which the degradation will occur.

    Keywords

    biodegradable, degradable, compostable

    Rationale

There is currently significant confusion in the marketplace regarding the classification of products and materials as it relates to their degradability. The terms degradable, biodegradable, compostable and more are used interchangeably creating significant confusion when selecting materials as well as in the marketing of materials and products. This classification will provide a system useful in classifying the performance of materials and in clearly identifying desired degradation characteristics of a material in purchase requests.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
