ASTM WK55630

New Specification for Mechanical Joint Adapter Fitting for Use with Polyethylene Pressure Pipe in Nominal Pipe Sizes 2 to 48 in. (50 to 1200 mm)

    (What is a Work Item?)

Developed by Subcommittee: F17.10 | Committee F17 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Scope

1.1 This specification covers the polyethylene material and dimensions applicable to mechanical joint adapters (MJAs) used to connect polyethylene pipes to other mechanical joint pipe and components such as metallic valves and ductile-iron fittings. 1.2 This specification describes outside diameter controlled polyethylene (PE) pipe MJAs in diameters ranging from 2 through 48 in. (50 through 1200 mm). The flange adapters may be manufactured by various methods including injection molding, compression molding, and machining from extruded thick-wall polyethylene pipe. 1.3 The mechanical joint adapter is the principal transition connection fitting between polyethylene pipe and the ductile-ion pipe mechanical joint assembly used with low-pressure to high-pressure polyethylene pipe systems for pressurized flow applications. The MJAs physical shape consists of the pipe-like neck, which is monolithic with its hub-ring and extended nose. The neck end is intended to be butt-fused or fusion coupled to the pipe-line; while the hub ring transfers the circumferential axial load into the compressed rubber gasket to affect the pressure seal when subjected to the distributed load from the gland-ring with its properly torqued tee-bolts and nuts. NOTE 1-Polyethylene MJAs with slip-on gland-rings are used as a bolt connection and transition into ductile-iron MJ bells (pipe and fittings) having AWWA C110 and AWWA C153 bolt hole patterns and complementary dimensions presented in those two-dimensional standards. 1.3 Units--The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 The use of gaskets and gasket selection are often an integral component of the flange adapter assembly. See the Plastic Pipe Institute Technical Note TN-38 for more information regarding HDPE flanged joints. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

mechanical joint; mechanical joint adapter; mechanical joint C110; gland ring; tee-bolts; polyethylene; polyethylene MJs; polyethylene pipe MJs ; MJ fittings:

Absence of standardized dimensions; it is used as a transition to ductile iron pipe and fittings; bought primarily by water utilities.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
