ASTM WK55333

    Revision of C33 / C33M - 16 Standard Specification for Concrete Aggregates

    (What is a Work Item?)

    Active Standard: C33 / C33M - 18

Developed by Subcommittee: C09.20 | Committee C09 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Rationale

ASTM C1778 was published in 2014 and provides guidance on Alkali-Aggregate Reaction (AAR). At the direction of the C09 Executive Subcommittee, the C09 Coordination Subcommittee has developed and approved recommended guidance on revisions to existing standards that address AAR to defer to C1778 for testing and prevention. Accordingly, these standards are now being revised to conform to these recommendations. This revision to C33/C33M removes the extensive, non-mandatory Appendix on AAR, related references, and restrictions on deleteriously reactive substances, and instead refers the user to C1778. Updated Section 4 requires that project specifications or purchaser orders state any requirements for AAR. The specifier may consider the guidance in C1778 to evaluate the exposure, risk, and concrete materials and to establish restrictions on reactivity of aggregates, and if necessary, appropriate mitigation measures.
