    1. Scope

    1.1 This test method specifies how to determine the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity and, hence, the specific heat capacity per unit volume of solids, powders, pastes, and fluids. The experimental arrangement can be designed for different specimen sizes and measurements can be made in gaseous and vacuum environments at a range of temperatures and pressures. 1.2 This test method is suitable for testing homogeneous and isotropic materials, as well as anisotropic materials with a uniaxial structure. The homogeneity of the material should extend throughout the specimen and no thermal barriers (except those next to the probe) should be present within a range defined by the probing depth of the transient experiment. 1.3 This test method is suitable for materials having values of thermal conductivity, , in the approximate range 0.030 500 W/(mK) and values of thermal diffusivity, , in the approximate range 10-7 10-4 m2/s, and for temperatures, T, in the range 50 T 1200 K. The specific heat capacity per unit volume, C, can be obtained by dividing the thermal conductivity by the thermal diffusivity, that is, C = / , and is in the approximate range 0.005 C 5 MJ/(m3K). 1.4 Units--The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
