ASTM D36 needs to be revised to allow for use of automated instruments that stir during testing compared to non-stirring equipment. This includes the accessories that are supplied. Currently ASTM D36 is written to only allow brass rings and holders to be used if one wants to be compliant with the test method. Accessories supplied today are either stainless steel or coated brass. Also, when using automated instruments the dimensions of 5.6 are not compliant. The ring holder plate is usually 28-30 mm above the base plate instead of 25 mm because the analyzer is equipped with an electric eye. The light beam of the electric eye is usually 3-5 mm above the base plate, 25 mm below the ring support.
