ASTM WK46277

New Test Method for Measuring Backface Deformation of Clay Backing During Body Armor Testing

    (What is a Work Item?)

Developed by Subcommittee: E54.04 | Committee E54 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Scope

The scope of this work item is to develop a standard test method for the measurement of backface deformation in clay backing caused by a test threat that does not produce a complete penetration in a body armor test item. This applies to testing of soft body armor and hard plates. The goal for developing a standard test method is to achieve consistent measurement between laboratories and reduce measurement uncertainty. This standard will not address the backface deformation performance requirement. Test methods from the Department of Defense, National Institute of Justice, and private-sector test laboratories will be evaluated in developing the new standard.
