ASTM WK46152

New Specification for Performance of Head Protection for Law Enforcement Applications

    (What is a Work Item?)

Developed by Subcommittee: E54.04 | Committee E54 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Scope

The specification will define a minimum set of characteristics which should be measured to evaluate the performance and suitability for use of protective head gear for law enforcement applications, including ballistic protection and disturbance control. Ultimately the specification will be populated with a menu of test methods that end users can apply to evaluate specific performance features; including, but not limited to, perforation resistance, backface deformation, blunt impact, chin strap retention, stability, and other performance criteria related to life-safety, quality, durability, and function. Test methodology will be incorporated within the specification. Where current test methodology is not available, or is insufficient, this working group will create new methods and/or improve upon existing methods where possible.

A standard is needed to ensure that protective helmets are tested in a consistent manner. This document will provide government agencies with a means of establishing minimum performance requirements and ensure that manufacturers products are evaluated in consistent fashion.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
