ASTM WK41217

New Classification for Assessment of the Acoustical Performance of Existing Multi-Family Dwellings

    (What is a Work Item?)

Developed by Subcommittee: E33.04 | Committee E33 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Scope

This Classification is intended to be used to assess the overall acoustical attributes of a dwelling within a building containing other dwelling units or types of spaces. This Classification is not a design guide, neither is it a measurement method. This Classification assigns a letter grade to indicate the degree of quality, for various aspects of acoustical privacy and freedom from noise generated within the building. Building codes establish minimum permissible standards for acoustical privacy in multi-family dwellings, but beyond this minimum level do not provide a method to assess, and differentiate, the acoustical quality of multi-family dwellings. This Classification defines categories of acoustical quality that consider a) airborne and impact sound insulation characteristics between a dwelling unit and other spaces within the building, and b) noise generated by the operation of building mechanical systems and water appliances. Acoustical performance with respect to noises generated outside the building (outdoors) are not within the scope of this Classification.
