    New Practice for Molding Roller-Compacted Concrete Specimens in Rectangular Molds Using a Vibrating Hammer

    1. Scope

    1.1 This practice covers molding rectangular test specimens for rollercompacted concrete (RCC) when the standard procedures of rodding and internal vibration, as described in Practice C31/C31M, are not applicable. This practice is applicable to freshly mixed RCC prepared in the laboratory or the field. 1.2 Freshly mixed concrete is molded in rectangular molds using an electric vibrating hammer equipped with a shaft and square plate. 1.3 Units--The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard. 1.4 The text of this practice references notes and footnotes, which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of this practice. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. (WARNING--Fresh hydraulic cementitious mixtures are caustic and may cause chemical burns to exposed skin and tissue upon prolonged exposure.)

    Currently, there is not a practice for establishing flexural strength data on roller-compacted concrete for pavement design. Roller-compacted concrete is gaining use as a pavement for roads, shoulders, and streets, and all pavements need flexural strength data for design purposes.
