ASTM WK31391

New Specification for Testing of a Small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS)

    (What is a Work Item?)

Developed by Subcommittee: F38.01 | Committee F38 | Contact Staff Manager

    1. Scope

1.1 This specification is provided as a consensus standard in support of an application to a nations Civil Aviation Administration (CAA) for a permit to operate a small Unmanned Aircraft System (sUAS). 1.2 Suggested best practices for manufacturers/builders of multiple copies of sUAS can be found in WK29562 Standard Practice for the Design and Production/Build of Multiple Copies of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS).

This standard has been written in anticipation of the release of a rule by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other non-U.S. Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA) that may permit sUAS flight operations for other than hobby or recreational activities as long as the applicant complies with approved industry consensus-based standards. It is the objective of ASTM F38 to provide the FAA, other CAA, and industry with this standard as one, but not necessarily the only, means of compliance with these anticipated rules.
