    1. Scope

    1.1 This test method covers a procedure for testing fine aggregate for resistance to abrasion using the Micro-Deval apparatus. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. 1.3 The text of this test method references notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the test method. 1.4 This procedure may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

    Rationale

    This is a proposed new test for evaluating the abrasion resistance/toughness of fine aggregate for use in asphalt, hydraulic cement concrete, and allied products. It was first developed in the early 1990s and since then has been used extensively in Canada. There is increasing interest in using it in the USA. The test method below is based on that published by ASTM for the Coarse Aggregate Micro-Deval (D 6928) and the CSA version for testing fine aggregate (CSA A23.2-23A). This test has a good correlation with the Magnesium Sulfate Soundness test (C 88) and can be used as a relatively more precise, rapid substitute for that test.
