Significance and Use

In the assessment and evaluation of the toxic characteristics of a chemical, determination of the potential developmental toxicity is significant.

This test method is intended to permit the determination of a no-observed-effect level and the potential hazard to the unborn that may arise from exposure of the pregnant organism during gestation.

Scope

1.1 This test method is designed to assess the potential of a pesticide or chemical to present a hazard to the unborn arising from exposure of the maternal animal during pregnancy.

1.2 This test method assumes that the user is knowledgeable in animal toxicology and related pertinent areas, and it relies heavily on the judgment of the evaluator.

1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.

1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific hazard statements, see Section 6.
