Scope

1.1 These test methods cover the analyses usually required on commercial soda ash (sodium carbonate).

1.2 The analytical procedures appear in the following sections:

Sections
Total Alkalinity, Titrimetric
Sodium Bicarbonate, Titrimetric
Loss on Heating, Gravimetric
Moisture, Calculation
Sodium Chloride, Titrimetric
Sodium Sulfate, Gravimetric
Iron, Photometric
Sieve Analysis

1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.

1.4 Review the current Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for detailed information concerning toxicity, first aid procedures, handling and safety precautions.

This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific hazards statements are given in Section .

1.5 This test method covers the titrimetric determination of the total alkalinity of soda ash. This alkalinity is normally expressed as percent sodium oxide (Na2O).

1.6 This test method describes the titrimetric determination of sodium bicarbonate in soda ash. The lower limit of determination is 0.02 % sodium bicarbonate.

1.7 This test method covers the gravimetric determination of loss on heating of soda ash.

1.8 This test method covers the calculation of moisture in soda ash.

1.9 This test method covers the titrimetric determination of sodium chloride in soda ash. The lower limit of detection is 0.005 % sodium chloride.

1.10 This test method covers the gravimetric determination of sulfate present in soda ash. The lower limit of detection is 0.005 % sodium sulfate.

1.11 This test method covers the photometric determination of iron in soda ash. The lower limit of detection is 0.1 ppm as Fe.

1.12 This test method covers the sieve analysis of soda ash (sodium carbonate) to measure the particle size. ASTM STP 447A may also be useful to obtain guidelines for sieve analysis in general.
