Significance and Use

Calcium fluoride is available in nature in various forms and purities. A major use for it is in the manufacture of hydrofluoric acid. The test methods listed in 1.1 provide procedures for analyzing calcium fluoride to determine whether it is suitable for this use.

Scope

1.1 These test methods cover the chemical analyses of acid-grade calcium fluoride (fluorspar). These test methods appear in the following sections:

Sections
Volatiles as Moisture6-13
Silica14-22
Assay as Calcium Fluoride (CaF 2)23-32
Soluble Chloride as NaC133-50
Calcium Carbonate51-59
Phosphorus60-69
Arsenic70-78
Mixed Oxides (R2O3)79-87
Sulfide Sulfur88-96

1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.

1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.4 Review the current Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each chemical used in this standard for detailed information concerning toxicity, first-aid procedures, handling, and safety precautions.
