F40.04 on Rare Earth Materials

Access to Rare Earth Materials has been identified as a critical competiveness challenge to a broad range of industries in both Europe and the United States. To address this critical need, ASTM is partnering with industry, government, and public organizations to development international standards for Rare Earth Materials.

An Opportunity to Lead via ASTM Standards

This subcommittee is part of Committee F40 on Declarable Substances in Materials. The Committee’s scope is to develop standards to assist companies with compliance to REACH, RoHS and similar regulations. This scope helped to identify the development of standards in Rare Earth Materials as a vital component in product development and sustainable procurement of resources.

Members of subcommittee F40.04 will be at the forefront of change in this dynamic field, developing the consensus standards that guide best practices throughout the industry in developing safe and consistent products for their respective markets. ASTM F40.04 will pursue a standards agenda that fills critical needs across all aspects of rare earths including:

    • Material Standards to Assist in Efficient Use of Available Resources
    • Environmental Considerations for Selection and Use
    • Material Selection Standards and Guides
    • Chemical and Physical identification, Characterization and Testing
    • Alternative Material Selection and Effectiveness Testing
    • Recycle, Reuse, and Recapture of Materials
    • Labeling and End-of-Life Considerations
    • Classification and Terminology
    • Guides for Supply Chain Management and Risk Management

Shape Future Standards through Open Collaboration

The proven ASTM process offers the open and collaborative forum where all interested parties can influence the future direction of standards for rare earths and materials made with rare earths. F40.04 will bring together stakeholders from all aspects of this issue to work together in the true spirit of cooperation.
