Nickel Alloy Pipe and Tube

The creation of new nickel base alloys in pipe and tube forms, used in oil and power industries, was the driving force for developing a new ASTM International standard, B983, Specification for Precipitation Hardened or Cold Worked, Seamless Nickel Alloy Pipe and Tube.

B983 was developed by Subcommittee B02.07 on Refined Nickel and Cobalt and Their Alloys, part of ASTM International Committee B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys.

According to Michael Katcher, manager, codes and standards, Haynes International, and a B02.07 member, B983 will be used to define the strength and corrosion resistance of covered alloys. “There was not an existing standard that covered nickel alloy age-hardened or cold-worked tube and pipe,” says Katcher. “An ASTM standard was needed to cover this type of product.”

B983 outlines chemical composition ranges and heat treatment parameters that users will need to obtain the minimum mechanical properties listed in the standard. Three primary alloys covered are:

  • UNS N07022, used for oil casings for ultra-deep, down-hole drilling;
  • UNS N07725, used in oil and gas production equipment and marine applications; and
  • UNS N07740, designed for superheater/reheater tubing and steam header piping in advanced ultra-supercritical coal fired power plants.

Users of B983 will include oil drilling and supply companies, high pressure boiler manufacturers, oil and gas companies and electric utilities.
