U.S. EPA Approves Three ASTM Water Standards for Contaminant Measurement

On June 19, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency included three ASTM International standards among the most recent alternative analytical methods approved to measure levels of contaminants in drinking water and determine compliance with national primary drinking water regulations.

The approved ASTM standards are:

  • D512, Test Methods for Chloride Ion in Water.
  • D3223, Test Method for Total Mercury in Water.
  • D4327, Test Method for Anions in Water by Suppressed Ion Chromatography.

All three standards were developed by Subcommittee D19.05 on Inorganic Constituents in Water, part of ASTM International Committee D19 on Water.

According to the EPA rule, “The Safe Drinking Water Act authorizes the EPA to approve use of alternative testing methods through publication in the Federal Register. This expedited approach provides public water systems, laboratories and primacy agencies with more timely access to new measurement techniques and greater flexibility in the selection of analytical methods, thereby reducing monitoring costs while maintaining public health protection.”
