ASTM Committee a Co-Sponsor of Composites Conference

The 29th Annual Technical Conference of the American Society for Composites will be held Sept. 8-10 at the Price Center, University of California San Diego, La Jolla, Calif., and ASTM International Committee D30 on Composite Materials is a co-sponsor. Abstracts are due Jan. 15 for papers focusing on recent research, development and applications of composite structures and materials. Topics to be covered include crashworthiness and energy absorption, damage and fracture, delamination and interlaminar failure prediction/modeling, durability and aging, fibers, impact, nondestructive evaluation, processing and manufacturing, sandwich structures and more.

ASHRAE to Hold High Performance Buildings Conference in April

The 2014 ASHRAE High Performance Buildings Conference, which will be held April 7-8 in San Francisco, Calif., is intended to advance industry work on the high performance built environment. Conference topics will consider high performance building design; new subject areas include water efficiency, building occupant behavior, new building technologies and indoor environmental quality.

Baldrige Award Honors School District and Healthcare Organizations

Pewaukee School District, Pewaukee, Wis. (education); Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano, Plano, Texas (healthcare); and Sutter Davis Hospital, Davis, Calif. (healthcare), won the 2013 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The award is the United States' highest presidential honor for performance excellence through innovation, improvement and visionary leadership. An independent board of examiners evaluated the applicants in the areas of leadership; strategic planning; customer focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; work force focus; operations focus and results. The awards will be presented in April.

AISC Publishes Steel Design Guide

The American Institute of Steel Construction has published AISC Steel Design Guide No. 28, Stability Design of Steel Buildings, written by Lawrence Griffis, P.E., senior principal and president of the Structures Division at Walter P Moore, Austin, Texas, and Donald White, Ph.D., professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Atlanta, Ga. The guide details methods for stability design, including the introduction of the direct analysis method, which is aligned with design provisions in the 2005 AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings.

ICC Rolls Out New Code Development Tool

The International Code Council has introduced an online cloud-based tool for ICC's code development process. With cdpACCESS, code change proposals can now be created and submitted online, and participants can collaborate online.
