SES Conference Coming in August
The Art and Science of Standardization, the annual conference of SES — The Society for Standards Professionals, will be held Aug. 12-15 in Savannah, Ga. Jim Pauley, senior vice president, external affairs and government relations, Schneider Electric, and chairman of the board of directors, American National Standards Institute, will deliver the keynote address. Conference sessions will highlight participation and cooperation in standards work, conformity assessment, intellectual property, standards in research and academia, and standards and strategic content.
2013 World Standards Day Papers
Papers on the theme of “Standards for a World at Work and Play” are due Aug. 3 for the 2013 World Standards Day Paper Competition co-sponsored by SES — The Society for Standards Professionals and the U.S. World Standards Day Planning Committee. The topic recognizes standards as tools that assure repeatability, consistency, dependability and excellence; it identifies standards setting bodies as forums for the public and private sectors to collaborate together for a common good; and it confirms that standards bring confidence and benefits to government, business and consumers. Cash prizes will go to the best three papers submitted.
World Standards Week
The 2013 World Standards Week will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 4 in Washington, D.C. An annual event drawing together the standards and conformity assessment community, the gathering includes committee meetings, forums and more. The U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day, “Standards for a World at Work and Play,” will be held Oct. 3 and will focus on the essential role of standards.
IgCC Guide Available
Building Code Basics: Green, Based on the 2012 International Green Construction Code, is available for sale from the International Code Council. Intended to be a practical reference, the guide features illustrations and tables; references to relevant code sections to help connect the IgCC to real-world applications; practical, on-the-job scenarios of code applications; and use of current methodologies and standards.
Polymer Pipe Report Published
The Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative, a joint initiative of the American National Standards Institute and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, has published a report, "Polymer Piping Codes and Standards for Nuclear Power Plants: Current Status and Recommendations for Future Codes and Standards Development,” developed by its Polymer Pipe Task Group. The report looks at current standards and gives recommendations for future code and standards development related to polymer piping for nuclear applications; it also identifies existing gaps in piping standards associated with nuclear applications as well as guidelines and recommended mechanisms for addressing the gaps.
