    ABOUT THE EVENT

A Symposium on Problems and Solutions for Building Walls Exposed to Continued Water Accumulations: Lessons from the Past and Recommendations for the Future will to be held Sunday and Monday April 14-15, 2013. Sponsored by ASTM Committee E06.55 on Exterior Building Wall Systems, the symposium will be held at the JW Marriott Indianapolis in Indianapolis, IN, in conjunction with the April standards development meetings of Committee.

    Objective
Over the past two decades, significant strides have been accomplished with regard to the quality and reliability of many major consumer items purchased and used in our daily lives. These items include computers, electronics, appliances and automobiles. Most of these marked improvements can be attributed to an ever more sophisticated and informed consumer who is armed with unlimited access to product review, timely reporting of problems and access to comparative data including both performance and reliability.

The performance of building wall assemblies, including both new construction and repair/rehabilitation has not enjoyed the same level of improvement attained by these manufactured consumer products. While the design and construction of building envelopes varies significantly from the manufacturer of consumer products, we continue to fall behind because of the ill-considered focus on low initial price while too often ignoring long-term value and performance (total cost). In point of fact, the information regarding how to correct and avoid unintended water entry, infiltration, and accumulation in exterior wall assemblies is already known and available. The problem is one of recognition of the necessity, acceptance of the responsibility, and implementation of these tools and knowledge.

Twenty- two years ago, ASTM Sub-Committee E06.55 sponsored its first symposium pertaining to water in exterior building walls. Since that time, the proliferation of both new and previously repaired buildings that leak and/or continue to leak, and/or suffer from unintended moisture accumulation has increased. Through the continued efforts of many ASTM Committees, including E-06.55, numerous standards have been and continue to be developed to address the evaluation, design and repair of building walls. The objective of this symposium is to document both the industry's and ASTM's efforts in addressing these problems through standard development, and disseminate this information. Discussion of past, current, and future research, case studies, and recommendations for analysis, design approaches, construction tools and proactive maintenance intended to both maintain and extend the service life of our society's building inventory can assist in accomplishing this objective.

The language of the symposium will be English.
