ABOUT THE EVENT
A Workshop on "Standards and Measurements for Tissue Engineering Scaffolds: What Do We Have; What Do We Need?" will be held Tuesday May 21, 2013. Sponsored by ASTM Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices, the workshop will be held at the JW Marriott Indianapolis in Indianapolis, IN, in conjunction with the May standards development meetings of Committee.
The purpose of the workshop is to identify the highest priority items for future standards work for scaffolds for TEMPs.
This work shop will bring together government, academia and industry to discuss how standards for tissue engineering scaffolds are currently being used by the community and what opportunities exist for developing new scaffold standards. Leaders in the field, including clinicians, regulators and product developers will discuss how their organizations use ASTM scaffolds standards and what standards they needed to accelerate future scaffold development. The workshop will focus more on discussion of future needs than on presentation of past accomplishments. The workshop is sponsored by ASTM Committee F04 Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices and will be held in conjunction with the May 2013 standards week.

Those involved in developing scaffolds-based TEMPs including industry, government and academia
- Identify issues needed for future ASTM TEMPs standards activities
- Standards to advance regulatory approval and product introduction
- Prioritize future work so that most important issues are addressed first
- Determine how standards or reference materials are most likely to be used
- How can measurements/standards help with translation
- Determine whether standards/reference materials are for discovery stage or product review stage
- Identify targets for future scaffold reference materials
- Prioritize the measurements that should be used from the current standard guides
- Develop a hierarchy of future measurements/standards priorities for scaffold characterization
- Validation of models for predicting scaffold properties
- Needs for scaffold standards as revealed by basic research and/or clinical research/experience
- Traceability of measurements for reporting and publication of laboratory/clinical results
- Assessing incorporation of new measurement technologies into standards
- Value of standards from a regulatory perspective
- In vitro testing of cell behavior on scaffolds and factors that affect cell response: structural, chemical & mechanical properties of scaffolds
- Storage and packaging of scaffolds, determination of shelf life
- Batch to batch testing of scaffolds, release criteria
Presenters are requested to send their abstract to Carl Simon firstname.lastname@example.org via email by April 15, 2013. All speakers must submit an abstract. All attendees may also submit an abstract to be published in the workshop program. All attendees also have the option to present submitted abstracts at the one-on-one "Posters-on-Laptop Session". Please indicate in your submission email if you would like to participate in the "Posters-on-Laptop Session". All abstract submitters should focus on future needs instead of summarizing past accomplishments. All abstracts will be reviewed for acceptance. Online registration opens approximately 8 weeks before the workshop and closes May 15, 2013. The fees to attend this workshop are listed below.
Students – A student's fee is waived, provided that he/she is a full-time student and is not employed full time. After registering online, the student must check in at the ASTM Registration Desk on site and present his/her student ID. The waived fee includes admission to the technical sessions only.
All attendees, including presenters and ASTM members, are urged to register online for this event so that space requirements can be accommodated. If you do not register online by the closing date, then you must register upon arrival at the workshop. All attendees must check in at the ASTM registration desk upon arrival at workshop.

CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS
Workshop attendees interested in receiving 0.7 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) should complete a CEU application form at the adjournment of the workshop, and then submit it to the ASTM staff member on site. A certificate will be sent to the attendee approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the workshop.

All meetings will be held at the JW Marriott Indianapolis, 10 S. West St., Indianapolis, IN 46204. Reservations may be made at the JW Marriott by using the online reservation system Reservation at the JW Marriott Indianapolis.

Group rate will be honored until the ASTM block is full but no later than April 12, 2013. ASTM rates are $159 single/double plus 17% tax at the JW Marriott Indianapolis. You may be charged a higher rate if reservations are received after the cut-off date, or when the block is full.
U.S. GOVERNMENT RATES: You must contact the Marriott Courtyard Indianapolis, 601 West Washington St. for the Government per diem rate of $91 plus 17% tax. IMPORTANT! ASTM Rates are non-commissionable. If you book your reservation through a travel agent they must ask for a non-commissioned ASTM Group Rate. ASTM cannot adjust your higher rate if commissions were paid to a travel agency.

CONFIRMATION NOTICES: A confirmation number is provided to you electronically once your reservation has been submitted.
CANCELLATION/CHANGE POLICY: At the JW Marriott Indianapolis, notice of cancellation must be received by 6:00pm on the day of arrival.
