 ABOUT THE EVENT

Presentations are invited for a Workshop on Methods for Investigation of Unexpected Performance and Properties of Cementitious Mixtures to be held Sunday December 7, 2014 from 6:30pm-9:30pm. Sponsored by ASTM Sub-Committee C09.48 on Performance of Cementitious Materials and Admixture Combinations, the workshop will be held at the Sheraton New Orleans in New Orleans, LA, in conjunction with the December standards development meetings of Committee.

Objective
As concrete and related mixtures become more complex, with multiple and/or unfamiliar cementitious materials and chemical admixtures, prediction of performance and properties becomes more challenging. Unexpected trends are experienced more frequently, and resolution is often elusive. Both plastic and hardened mixture properties may be affected, and may include development of initial workability and/or workability retention, setting characteristics, abnormal or rapid early stiffening, inadequate or higher than expected strength development, air entrainment, volume change, bleeding, and finishability.

The objectives of this workshop are:

    a) to present case history examples of unexpected performance and properties that have been observed in such mixtures and methods that were useful in evaluating and understanding them,

    b) to consider and generate dialogue on the extent to which various Standard Methods and Standard Practices such as those based on paste or mortar mixtures can be useful in understanding such behavior and leading to resolution of problematic trends, and

    c) to present new approaches and methods or modifications to existing tests or practices that have been productively used toward these ends.

Potential presenters are invited to submit a title and abstract of 500 words or less on specific experiences and/or research or method development that supports these objectives to: tim.cost@holcim.com, by 8-31-2014. Please identify the presenter(s) who will be present for the workshop and will present. 5 to 7 presentations will be accepted for the workshop; notification of acceptance of presentations and the tentative workshop schedule will be made by 9-30-2014.

The target audience will include but would not be limited to: (a) concrete technologists responsible for the developing and/or specifying concrete mix designs; (b) quality control managers of production concrete; (c) and industrial and academic material scientists looking to further understand the complexity of cementitious-admixture-aggregate interactions.

The language of the workshop will be English.
