A Seminar on Marine Anti-Fouling Paints- Performance Standards and Testing will be held Wednesday, December 5, 2012. Sponsored by ASTM Committee F25 on Ships and Marine Technology, the workshop will be held at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta in Atlanta, GA, in conjunction with the December standards development meetings of the committee.
The seminar is designed to facilitate dialog and discussion regarding the need for a Marine Anti-Fouling Paint Performance Standard. Those in the marine industry will discuss issues regarding anti-fouling paint performance, the current state-of-the- Art, future technologies, and the potential development of an ASTM performance standard.
Currently, it is hard to get comparable data on the performance of ship hull coating systems because there is a lack of standardization of the collection of data, and of the interpretation of the same data. As such it is hard for ship owners to justify investment in better and often more capital intensive products that in fact could save on fuel, and as such, reduce air emissions. Once there is a standardized way to measure performance, and good quality data is collected, it will be possible in the future to generate a guide to antifouling paint selection for optimum performance for each ship type and operative profile.
