 ABOUT THE EVENT

A Workshop on the Effect of Coatings on the Structural Integrity of Fasteners, sponsored by ASTM Committee F16 on Fasteners and its Subcommittee F16.96 on Bolting Technology, will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2009 from 10:00am - 5:00pm. The workshop will be held at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver in Vancouver, BC, Canada, in conjunction with the May 17-20 standards development meetings of Committee F16.

High strength and ultrahigh strength threaded mechanical fasteners are broadly characterized by tensile strengths ranging from 150 to 300 ksi (1,000 to 2,000 MPa). They are often used in critical components, typically comprising load bearing joints in aircraft structures, ships, ground vehicles, bridges, tunnels and buildings. Damage resulting in loss of integrity or failure can occur by a complex interaction of material characteristics, processing conditions, environmental conditions, manufacturing flaws, installation conditions, and joint design. The consequences of failures can range from minimal to catastrophic, even resulting in loss of life. An important consideration in the design of a fastened joint deals with the selection, processing, and application of coatings. These coatings are designed to extend the corrosion life of the fastener. However, in some cases they may also have the unanticipated effect of compromising their integrity. For example, the introduction of hydrogen during the coating process or from the service environment can cause delayed hydrogen assisted cracking after the fastener has been put into service.
