A Workshop on Fretting Fatigue of Metallic Medical Devices and Materials, sponsored by ASTM Committees E08 on Fatigue and Fracture and F04 on Medical and Surgical Implants and Materials, will be held Tuesday morning, November 10, 2009, from 8:00am to 12:00pm. The workshop will be held at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia, in conjunction with the November 9-13 standards development meetings of Committees E08 and F04. The E08.05.05 Task Group on Fretting Fatigue is presently developing a Standard Guide for Fretting Fatigue Testing. This workshop is aimed at identifying related fretting activities or concerns in Committee F04 involving either medical devices or materials. For example, the contraction and expansion of the heart may induce cyclic small sliding motions at the interface of overlapped stents resulting in wear or other damage that may result in stent fracture. Presently, the co-chairs would like to invite participants that have looked at fretting of interfaces of materials used in orthopedic and cardiovascular devices, have shown evidence that fretting can occur in these medical devices in-vivo, or have developed methods to evaluate fretting of these devices or materials. Solicitation of PresentationsPotential presenters/participants with experiences and concerns in fretting of medical devices and materials used in medical devices are requested to contact Workshop Co-Chair Rick Neu at rick.neu@gatech.edu.
