 ABOUT THE EVENT

The Michael E. Beard Asbestos Conference 2010: Laboratory Issues, sponsored by ASTM Committee D22 on Air Quality, will be held January 28-29, 2010. The conference will be held at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas.

This ASTM Asbestos Conference: Laboratory Issues is dedicated to the memory of Michael E. Beard (1940 - 2008). Mr. Beard served for many years as the Chair of (ASTM International) Subcommittee D22.07 on Sampling and Analysis of Asbestos, which is responsible for developing methods for monitoring asbestos in various media. The Conference commemorates one of Mike's most important contributions -- the long-term stewarding of the ASTM International Johnson Conferences on asbestos.

The Conference is a succinct two-day set of presentations on asbestos topics geared toward those who work in laboratories, those who use laboratory analytical data, and those who need to understand how to interpret asbestos results. The Conference will follow the policies established for the Johnson Conferences to encourage the presentation of the most recent work in the field and to allow open and frank discussion of new ideas and possible interpretation of the data. There will be no publication of the Conference presentations (although some form of extended abstracts is under consideration), and electronic recording of presentations will not be permitted.

Session papers will reflect emerging technologies and concerns in the following areas:

    1. Analysis of Soil and Other Media
    2. Quality Assurance, Training, Inter-Laboratory Studies
    3. Definitions of Asbestos, Cleavage Fragments and NOA Considerations
    4. Issues of Laboratory Interactions with NVLAP, Assessors and Government Agencies.

The language of the conference will be English.
