    About the Event

    An International Symposium on Mechanical Properties of Frozen Soils will be held January 31, 2013 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Sponsored by ASTM Committee D18 on Soil and Rock, the symposium will be held at the Hyatt Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida in conjunction with the January standards development meetings of Committee.

    Objective
    The symposium will provide a forum for exchange of ideas on current research on the testing of mechanical properties of frozen ground. A key objective is to identify new opportunities for standards and specifications that will facilitate construction on frozen soils as well as utilization of natural resources in frozen soil conditions.

    Who Should Attend

    • Geotechnical engineers and researchers interested in northern engineering projects, such as infrastructure, buildings, pipelines for petroleum industry.
    • Agency representatives from Departments of Transportation, Forest Service, Departments of Natural Resources, U.S. Army Cold Regions Research Laboratory (CRREL).
    • Specifically, mining engineers in Tarsands tailings research in Northern Alberta and diamond open pit mining in Northern Canada as well as engineers dealing with freezing technologies in potash shaft sinking through water bearing strata.

    The language of the symposium will be English.


    Registration Information

    Online registration opens approximately 8 weeks before the symposium and closes January 23, 2013. The fees to attend this symposium are listed below. These fees include:

    • the Wednesday evening reception (cash bar),
    • the Thursday luncheon

    Students – A student's fee is waived, provided that he/she is a full-time student and is not employed full time. After registering online, the student must check in at the ASTM Registration Desk on site and present his/her student ID. The waived fee includes admission to the technical sessions, but does not include the social events and food functions listed above.

    All attendees, including presenters and ASTM members, are urged to register online for this event so that space requirements can be accommodated. If you do not register online by the closing date, then you must register upon arrival at the symposium. All attendees must check in at the ASTM registration desk upon arrival at symposium.

    Continuing Education Units

    Symposium attendees interested in receiving 0.7 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) should complete a CEU application form at the adjournment of the symposium, and then submit it to the ASTM staff member on site. A certificate will be sent to the attendee approximately 4 to 6 weeks after the symposium.

    Group rate will be honored until the ASTM block is full but no later than December 16, 2012. ASTM rates are $155 single/double plus 14.13% tax. You may be charged a higher rate if reservations are received after the cut-off date, or when the block is full.

    U.S. GOVERNMENT RATES: The Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront has a limited number of rooms at the government per diem rate of $80 plus 14.13% tax.     IMPORTANT! ASTM rates are non-commissionable. If you book your reservation through a travel agent they must ask for a non-commissioned ASTM Group Rate. ASTM cannot adjust your higher rate if commissions were paid to a travel agency.

    CANCELLATION/CHANGE POLICY: At the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront, notice of cancellation must be received by 3:00pm the day prior to arrival.

    AIRPORT SHUTTLE SERVICE: Express Shuttle provides regular schedules shuttle service from Jacksonville International Airport to the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront. The cost is $20 each way. Taxis cost approximately $40.

    PARKING: Overnight parking is available at $20 for valet and $15 self parking with in and out privileges.


    Dress and Weather

    Attendees have the option to determine their dress at ASTM meetings. Business casual attire is acceptable at this meeting and appropriate for Jacksonville. The average temperatures in January range from a high of 65 degrees to a low of 42 degrees.
