A Workshop on Fuel Corrosivity and Material Compatibility of Petroleum and Alternative Liquid Fuels will be held July 1, 2010 from 8:00am to 3:00pm. Previously titled as a "Symposium", the format was revised to that of a "Workshop", with emphasis on fewer presentations and more discussion. Sponsored by ASTM Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, the workshop will be held at the Westin Crown Center, in conjunction with the June 27-July 1 standards development meetings of the committee. General Objectives – The general objective of the workshop is to hold a technical forum hosted by a panel of industry experts to discuss the corrosivity and material compatibility aspects of petroleum and alternative liquid fuels and their impact on the materials generally used in the fuel distribution systems, storage systems, dispensing systems and vehicle fuel systems. Specific Objectives – The specific objectives that will be realized by the attendees include: - How petroleum and alternative fuels can potentially have corrosive characteristics,
- How approved additives used in conjunction with petroleum and alternative fuels can potentially possess corrosive characteristics,
- How contaminants such as water, adulterants, pollutants, and microorganisms can enhance corrosion mechanisms within fuel distribution systems, storage systems, dispensing systems and vehicle fuel systems,
- A general understanding of the materials used in the construction of fuel distribution systems, fuel storage systems, fuel dispensing systems, and associated corrosion mechanisms,
- How the design of the fuel system can affect corrosion mechanisms within the system.
- Potential material strategies to cope with fuel composition.
Target Audience – This workshop is appropriate for those individuals that are involved in the regulation, production, long term storage, and transportation or dispensing of petroleum and alternative liquid fuels. Program The proposed program will consist of approximately six presentations in the morning. In the afternoon there will be a panel of mini-presentations and a question-and-answer discussion. A program agenda (with presentation titles and presenters' names and affiliations) will be posted on the ASTM website by end February 2010. Solicitation of Presentations/Participation in Panel Discussion Presentations on, but not limited to, the above topics are sought. Interested participants must submit a 300-500 word bstract by January 15, 2010 by email to the workshop chairs listed below. A formal publication of the presentations in a separate printed volume will not be issued by ASTM. Presenters are welcome to submit their formal papers to the online Journal of ASTM International. If you wish to participate in the panel discussion, contact the workshop chairs listed below by January 15, 2010. You may have pre-prepared comments up to 10 minutes on the "fuel corrosion related" topic of your choice. In addition, fuel corrosion related questions will be solicited from attendees for the panel to respond to. A proceedings of the panel and the Q&A discussion will not be published.
