I work for NAUE GmbH & Co. KG as director of marketing and geosynthetic product management. |

|
I first became involved around 1992 because I thought that my firm, a world market leader for geosynthetics, should be involved in working on new standards. |

In which committees are you active? Are you a committee officer; if so, what group or groups? |

I work mainly on Committee D35 on Geosynthetics, where I am vice chairman of Subcommittee D35.04 on Geosynthetic Clay Liners, and I follow the activities in D18 on Soil Rock. |

How do you apply ASTM standards in your work? |
|
|
|
|

A. |
|
As a world market leader for geosynthetics we are often asked by designers and/or regulators how regulations, recommendations, specifications should be written. It is then a huge advantage if I can refer to published standards. Further, I work in several other standardization groups and if applicable I recommend using ASTM standards, rather than re-inventing the wheel and writing new standards on the same topic, e.g., published application-related CEN standards for geosynthetic barriers. |

|
Through being involved in standards development, you are always knowledgeable about state of the art practice. In addition, you can help ensure that the most worthwhile standards are produced. |

What are some of your favorite aspects of your job? |
|
|
|
|
|
A. |
|
I particularly enjoy new product development and presenting the latest technology and products to interested clients. Another favorite aspect in my job is that I get involved in long-term business strategies and am involved in their execution. |

Are there advantages that you can identify that result from having an understanding of standards? |
|
|
|
|
|
A. |
|
When you understand standards, you can ensure that specifications cite the correct standards, and you know that results between products are comparableÁ??if they are tested according to the same standards. It is extremely important to understand standards when they are application oriented. |

Are there any words of wisdom that you can offer to professionals starting out in your field? |
|
|
|
|
|
A. |
|
Be honest and always follow the ethically correct line and trust your intuition once in a while rather than some analytical or rational thoughts!
