1.1 This laboratory test method describes a procedure to evaluate the efficacy of copper and copper alloy non-food contact surfaces in reducing bacterial contamination and buildup on a continuing, ongoing, persistent basis following repeated exposures to the test organisms. NOTE 1--This test method, through extensive testing, was used to establish the antimicrobial characteristics of copper alloys and resulted in the EPA registration of a significant number of alloys. This test method as stated is how the alloys in the registered list were tested and accepted but is not intended for use as a dynamic product qualification test. It is a current, initial efficacy test but may not reflect the most recent developments in laboratory practices. It is a viable, verifiable test method translated from an EPA protocol into ASTM format. 1.2 The use of copper surfaces is a supplement to, and not a substitute for, standard infection control practices. The copper surfaces shall be used bare, not coated such as waxed, painted, lacquered, varnished, or otherwise coated. 1.3 It is the responsibility of the investigator to determine whether good laboratory practices (GLPs) are required and follow them when appropriate. 1.4 This test method may involve hazardous materials, chemicals, and microorganisms and should be performed only by persons who have had formal microbiological training. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 Units--The units stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with this standard.
This test method establishes a procedure for verifying the continuous antimicrobial sanitizing characteristics of copper as it might apply to any touch surface with the intent of elimination of pathogen contamination of surfaces, particularly in health care related environments. This is on a continuous, ongoing, persistent basis following repeated exposures to test organisms.
