PEX Tubing Systems utilized in non-potable water applications intended primarily for hydronic heating/cooling systems inclusive of barrier layer(s) performance requirements. The new standards scope will be established and finalized by task group at the Plastic Pipe Institute (PPI) but at minimum will be inclusive of the present day CTS SDR-9 construction, and limited to only inch size dimensions based also on standard SDRs.
This standard is needed to differentiate SDR-9 PEX tubing used in non-potable water applications with new dimensional allowances and performance requirements for oxygen permeation. The standard may also be broadened in a future version to include SDR's other than SDR-9 if the industry supports it. While barrier layers are allowed today in the present ASTM F876 standard specification, there are no testing requirements, nor are there any dimensional allowances which consider the hydrostatic properties of the whole construction inclusive of layers. A new standard could allow for different design factors, pressure ratings, increased number of performance requirements above and beyond what the present day F876 allows for. There is also growing pressure by the model building codes to have a separate standard for pipe used in hydronic applications.
